7,400 civilians tried in Egypt's military courts

Over the past eighteen months, Egypt's military courts have tried at least 7,420 Egyptian civilians. Human Rights Watch have released this figure, which is based on the research of an Egyption human rights organisation. In October 2014 the Egyptian president, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, decreed a major new law that expanded military court jurisdiction, thus enabling supporters of the opposition to be given a military trial.
