Egypt arrests son of deposed president Morsi

Egyptian authorities on Thursday arrested a son of deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi on charges of inciting violence, private newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported.

Osama, one of Morsi's five children, was arrested in his father's Nile Delta hometown of Sharkia, the paper added, citing unnamed security officials.

A spokesman for the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood condemned what he called the "abduction" of Osama, who is a lawyer. There was no immediate official comment.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was toppled by the army in 2013 following mass protests against his divisive rule.

Morsi, a senior official in the Muslim Brotherhood, has since been in jail and convicted in several cases. Hundreds of the Islamist group's leaders and followers have also been rounded up and given heavy-handed sentences on various charges including inciting and participating in violence.    (dpa)
