Jets bomb bakeries in rebel-held Aleppo areas

On Thursday unidentified jets bombarded bakeries in two rebel-held areas in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, activists said.

"One bakery was bombed in the town of Anadan in the northern countryside of Aleppo and a second was struck in the town of Kfar Naha in the western part of Aleppo countryside," said a local activist, who gave his name only as Wissam for security reasons. At least three people were injured in the air raids on Kfar Naha, Wissam added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, reported heavy strikes on both areas. The bombardment has put the bakery in Anadan, the only one in the town, out of work, the Observatory added. No casualties were reported.

On Wednesday, 11 people were killed in government shelling that hit a bread queue in opposition-controlled eastern Aleppo, according to activists. Airstrikes by the Syrian government and allied Russia have killed more than 298 people in eastern Aleppo since 19 September, when a ceasefire brokered by the United States and Russia collapsed, according to the Observatory.

An estimated 300,000 people in eastern Aleppo are under siege by government forces. Residents there report declining supplies of basic goods, including food, electricity and medicine. Water supplies have also been badly damaged. US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel strongly condemn the "barbarous" Russian and Syrian regime airstrikes against eastern Aleppo, the White House said on Thursday.

Obama and Merkel, who spoke by phone, also agreed that Russia and the Syrian regime bear "special responsibility" for ending the fighting and for granting humanitarian access to besieged and hard-to-reach areas of the country.    (dpa)
