Cat Stevens to perform at Christchurch remembrance event

Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, is joining a local line-up of musicians who will perform at a national remembrance service for the 50 victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack on Friday.

The British singer-songwriter converted to Islam in 1977 and has since been a vocal proponent of forging understanding between the West and the Arab world.

In a statement announcing the line-up, released on Wednesday, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the memorial at Hagley Park near the al-Noor mosque will be an opportunity for people across New Zealand and around the world to come together.

The mosque is where 42 people were killed on March 15 when a suspected white supremacist opened fire on worshippers.

"The outpouring of love and support shown to our Muslim brothers and sisters has been heartfelt and has been received in the spirit in which it has been offered," Dalziel said. "It is in coming together as one, standing shoulder to shoulder, that gives expression to this unity and that's what will see us through," she added.

The service is expected to be attended by foreign leaders and dignitaries, as well as global Muslim leaders.    (dpa)
