Death of Sadiq al-Azm, Syrian intellectual and philosopher, 1934-2016

Considered one of the modern age's leading Arab intellectuals, Sadiq al-Azm was an advocate of freedom of speech, human rights and democracy for decades. Known for promoting dialogue between the Islamic world and Western Europe, the philosopher was awarded political asylum in Germany in 2012 owing to the escalating violence in Syria.
