Malala backs Muslim students in India fighting hijab ban

A ban on hijabs at several schools in India has prompted the human rights campaigner Malala Yousafzai to demand an end to “the marginalisation of Muslim women”.

Schools and colleges in the southern state of Karnataka, where 12 percent of the population is Muslim, were ordered to shut for three days on Tuesday after protests erupted over some refusing entry to students wearing the headscarf.

The government of Karnataka, which is ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of the prime minister Narendra Modi, said that all schools should follow dress codes set by management.

“It’s a bit shameful that our college is not worried about our studies,” one banned pupil told the Times of India.
