Thousands take to streets in Hamburg in solidarity with Iran protests

About 2,700 people took to the streets in the German city of Hamburg to rally in solidarity with Iranian anti-government demonstrators who have been protesting for months despite a brutal crackdown by security forces.

Iranian music was played and an old fire engine with a placard reading "Down with the Mullahs - Freedom for Iran" led the demonstration.

The demonstration was peaceful, said a police spokesperson, who also provided the turnout figure.

Iran's political leadership has been under enormous pressure since the nationwide protests broke out in mid-September.

Triggered by the death of Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in police custody, Tehran has plunged into its worst political crisis in decades. The 22-year-old had been arrested for violating strict Islamic dress codes relating to her hijab.

The Iranian judicial authority announced on Saturday that two more protestors had been hanged in the early hours of the morning, as Tehran continues to defy the international outcry over its repressive tactics against critics.

The two men were blamed for the death of a security guard during protests in November. Death sentences had already been carried out against two men in December in connection with the demonstrations. (dpa)
